Goal 1: Patient Care. Provide family centered patient care for the treatment of acute health problems that is developmentally and age appropriate, compassionate, and effective.

1.  Perform a family-centered focused interview; identify significant caretakers & the role they play in presentation of the acute illness.

2.  Perform a physical exam with a focus on acute problem and patient or family concerns.

Goal 2: Medical Knowledge.   Demonstrate the ability to acquire, critically interpret and apply knowledge in patient care for the following common signs, symptoms, or conditions:

1. Acute illnesses such as fever, headache, ear pain, pharyngitis, respiratory distress, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, burns, rashes, and minor injuries

2. Acute exacerbations of chronic conditions such as asthma, ADHD, seizure disorder, and sickle cell anemia

3. Identification and appropriate evaluation for physical/ sexual abuse

Goal 3: Communication Skills. Demonstrate interpersonal and communication skills that result in information exchange and partnering with patients and their families.

1.  Provide effective patient education, including reassurance, for conditions common to the outpatient setting.

2.  Communicate effectively with subspecialists or emergency room physicians if child needs further care for their illness

Goal 4: Practice-based Learning and Improvement.  Demonstrate knowledge, skills and attitudes needed for continuous self-assessment, using scientific methods and evidence to investigate, evaluate, and improve one's patient care practice.
