The Introduction to Global Child Health Course is offered biannually. Sponsored by the CNH Pediatric Residency Program and GHI, it is intended for pediatric residents but is also open to all CNH and non-CNH fellows, faculty, nurses, staff, and students. The course is organized around issues central to global health topics and principles, and includes a dynamic line-up of presentations and speakers from our CNH GHI leaders and local entities such as USAID, Save the Children, JSI, Johns Hopkins University, University of Maryland, and Georgetown University.

During the course, participants examine global health issues including health care delivery, disease burden, and resource allocation; recognize, diagnose, and manage common illnesses and tropical diseases seen outside the United States; refine clinical judgment and diagnostic skills necessary in lower resource settings through case-based discussion and simulation; and, discuss principles of bioethics.

In the past, speakers have been invited to discuss global health policy, nutrition, and infectious diseases through case studies, lectures, and hospital wide symposiums. Previous courses have featured events such as a malaria lab practicum which showcased hands-on laboratory skills and allowed participants to explore laboratory medicine in a unique way. Another past event delved into caring for displaced children both here in the United States and abroad. In addition, the course routinely includes guest speakers who are able to highlight current global healthcare challenges. For example, past lectures have focused on immigrant and refugee healthcare in the context of humanitarian crises, migration, and armed conflict.
